To design the official programme stands to be used at 80 different locations around the Olympic Park and other sporting locations across the country where the Olympic and Paralympic Games were being held. This included the Sailing in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour, Lords Cricket ground for the Archery, Tennis at Wimbledon, Horse Guards Parade for the Beach Volleyball, Eton Dorney for the Rowing and Old Trafford in Manchester for the football to name but a few.
Working to strict brand guidelines, the main priority was to deliver over 250 portable display carts that were capable of being moved into position over sand and gravel, cobble stones and even mud and grass. They had to be stable and built to cope with the unpredictable nature of British Summertime- 30 degrees and dry one day to pouring rain the next. The construction needed to be strong enough to carry a total weight of 250kg when fully loaded with souvenir programmes and brochures, yet portable enough to be maneuvered by the event volunteers.
Other components to the project were the supply of branded portable marquees, designed so that they could easily be rebranded for future use as part of their extended life cycle, branding of permanent retail outlets at the Olympic Park and updating existing kiosks at Lords Cricket Ground and Wimbledon.
Apart from the usual challenges of working to tight deadlines and the logistics of delivering to 80 different locations in a short period of time, security at major events like these is extremely tight. This meant pre registering every driver, vehicle and installation member prior to delivery. Each had to be provided with the appropriate PPE and were required to sit through a series of Health and Safety and security briefings before they were cleared to work on the site. Security clearance to work on the track itself was given to very few of the hundreds of thousands of crew members who helped deliver what has been acknowledged as one of the Greatest Olympic Games in history. A privilege Access Displays is proud to have been a part of.
